Observation From The Field: Unstable Subgrade and Moisture

Benchmark Service: Construction Phase Services

Issue: After pulverization and compaction of a large asphalt parking lot area, heavy weekend rainfall and subgrade moisture made grading operations impossible due to instability.  Excavation/undercutting of the area would have been costly and far exceeded the budget of the project.

Solution: Benchmark devised a cost-effective plan to cement stabilize the subgrade, keeping cost within the base contract original budget.

Possible Impact: This was a rare occurrence of unstable pulverized material and outside moisture.  The option for it to dry out would have taken too much time and delayed the much-needed area from opening.

Subgrade is saturated with water. Subgrade is cement stabilized.
