The Profession of Roof Consultingby Curt Liscum, RRC The Roof Consultants Institute (RCI) is an international non-profit association of professional roof consultants, architects and engineers who specialize in the specification and design of roof systems. Among its mission goals, the RCI was formed in part to support professionalism, ethical behavior, education and research in the roofing industry. Founded in the early 1980s in Charlotte, North Carolina, the organization has grown to over 1,700, including members from every state, Canada, Mexico, Africa, Europe, Australia, the Middle East and the Philippines. Each member of RCI must agree to a Code of Ethics. In general, the Code requires that members maintain and further their knowledge of the science and profession of roof consulting, and maintain the highest possible standard of professional judgment and conduct in their practice of roof consulting. RCI currently offers two registration programs; the Registered Roof Consultant (RRC), and the Registered Roof Observer (RRO). Both registrations are earned by first qualifying to sit for the exam by demonstrating minimum requirements regarding education, personal work experience, character and ethics. The RRC exam is a two-part exam, eight hours in duration and covers 400 multiple choice problems and a variety of problem solving questions. The minimum passing grade is 70% for each part of the exam. The RRO exam is a multi-part multiple choice format, with 100 general questions, and a section that covers various types of roofing systems on the market today. The passing grade is also 70% for each part of the exam. Each program requires an aggressive continuing education requirement to maintain registration. Currently there are approximately 270 RRCs and 300 RROs registered. Benchmark has 7 RRCs and 5 RROs on staff. Two of Benchmark's RRCs are alumni of the first exam offered in 1987, and are part of the initial 8 consultants who earned the right to call themselves Registered Roof Consultants. In addition to RCI's annual convention, RCI is divided into eight regions. It is this author's privilege to have been elected by my peers to serve as Region III Director for a three-year term. For more information about RCI, I invite you to contact myself, or go online at www.rci-online.org. |
